On August 30, 2016, President Barack Obama commuted the sentence of George E. Smith, who was convicted in 2005 in the Southern District of Florida of possession with intent to distribute less than five grams of crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school and possession with intent to distribute a detectable amount of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school, in violation of 21 U.S.C. §§ 841(a)(1) and 860(a). Smith had originally been sentenced to 235 months imprisonment and 144 months supervised release.
