On January 17, 2017, President Barack Obama granted a commutation of sentence to Brian Lafonta Smith, who had been convicted in the Western District of Tennessee in 2008 of possession with intent to distribute cocaine base and convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Smith's original sentence of 180 months imprisonment with 48 months supervised release was reduced by the commutation.
